How to convert hourly to salary

The formula is simple: hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year. At 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year, a $25/hr job pays $52,000 annually. But few people work exactly 2,080 hours — vacations, holidays, and sick days reduce the actual number.

Adjusting for time off

If you get 2 weeks of paid vacation and 10 paid holidays, you still work all 52 weeks (you're paid for time off). If you're a contractor with unpaid time off, reduce weeks per year accordingly — 50 weeks is a common adjustment for 2 weeks off.

When hourly beats salary

Hourly workers get overtime pay (1.5x after 40 hours). If you regularly work 50+ hours/week, an hourly rate can yield more than a comparable salary. On the flip side, salaried positions often come with benefits (health insurance, 401k match, PTO) worth 20-30% of base pay.

Methodology. Annual salary = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year. Monthly = annual / 12. Biweekly = annual / 26. Weekly = annual / 52. Daily = weekly / 5. Defaults to 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year.

Frequently asked questions

Is $25/hr a good wage? +
$25/hr equals $52,000/year at full-time. That's above the 2025 national median individual income (~$45,000) but varies wildly by location. In San Francisco it's tight; in rural Alabama it's comfortable.
How many work hours in a year? +
Standard full-time is 2,080 hours (40 hrs/week x 52 weeks). After typical PTO (10 vacation days, 10 holidays), actual hours worked are closer to 1,920.
Does this include overtime? +
No. This is a straight conversion at regular pay. If you work overtime regularly, add those hours separately at 1.5x your base rate.
