How the fence cost calculator works

The calculator divides your total fence length by standard panel width (8 feet) to determine the number of panels and posts. It then prices out materials, labor, and gates separately. The biggest cost driver is material choice — vinyl and aluminum cost 2–3x more than wood but last significantly longer.

Fence material comparison

  • Wood (cedar/pine) — $75/panel, 15–20 year lifespan, most customizable
  • Vinyl — $120/panel, 20–30 year lifespan, zero maintenance
  • Chain-link — $45/panel, 20+ year lifespan, most affordable
  • Aluminum — $150/panel, 30+ year lifespan, decorative styles

Don't forget the gates

Gates cost $100–$250 each depending on material and width. Most yards need at least one gate. Plan gate locations before setting posts — a gate opening requires wider post spacing and heavier-duty hardware.

Methodology. Posts = ceil(Length ÷ Spacing) + 1. Panels = ceil(Length ÷ Panel width). Default post spacing is 8 feet; panel width is 8 feet. Material cost = panels × panel price + posts × post price + gates × gate price. Labor = length × per-foot labor rate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 100 feet of wood fence cost? +
A 100-foot wood fence needs about 13 panels and 14 posts. Materials run roughly $1,185 (panels + posts), labor adds $1,500, for a total of about $2,685. Add $120 per gate.
How deep should fence posts be? +
The general rule is one-third of the total post length should be underground. For a 6-foot fence with 8-foot posts, that means 2.5 feet deep. In areas with frost, posts should extend below the frost line — typically 36–48 inches.
Do I need a permit for a fence? +
Most jurisdictions require a permit for fences over 6 feet tall. Many HOAs have additional restrictions on material, color, and height. Always check local codes and HOA rules before starting. Also confirm your property lines with a survey.
How far apart should fence posts be? +
Standard spacing is 8 feet for wood and vinyl fences, matching panel width. For chain-link, posts are typically 10 feet apart. In high-wind areas or for tall fences, reduce spacing to 6 feet for added strength.
